Return to Campus

As the level of the virus in the Los Angeles area remains widespread, state guidelines say schools cannot reopen at this time, and we will not reopen schools until it’s safe and appropriate to do so. We are preparing to serve students at schools as soon as it’s possible, in the safest way possible. Detailed information on the safety protocols at schools and instructional models we’re preparing can be found in the Return to Campus Family Guide.

Families, in preparation for an eventual return to campus, we are giving every family a choice to make the best decision for your child and your family – a return to school or continuing with online learning. Please complete the Program Selection form, available in multiple languages, for each child available on Los Angeles Unified’s website by Sunday, December 6. If no response is collected for your child, the default option for each student will be the Hybrid Model. Click on image above for the Family Selection Form or click here.

The First Two Weeks of School

August 16, 2020

Dear Gardner Street School Families,

I hope this letter finds you well and managing all that is happening in the world right now. We fully appreciate the enormity of this moment in time. We at the school and the LAUSD staff at large, have been working around the clock to prepare for the upcoming school year. We recognize that there is much to do before August 18th and we are here to support you.

We are working to ensure that each child has a device, internet access, and  our families are connected to Schoology and Parent Portal. These two platforms are mandatory for children and parents to access the online curriculum that will be provided by their teachers.

Although these platforms have been around for many years, they have not been widely utilized by elementary educators. We too are learning and working tirelessly to prepare ourselves to support our students.

This week, we will be providing parents support meetings via Zoom to help you connect to the Parent Portal and Schoology. These meetings will be held:

School Opening Student Checklist

Checklist that students may complete on Tuesday (August 18) and Wednesday (August 19) as part of the student asynchronous instructional time.

These first weeks are important to establish productive routines and lay a strong foundation for learning. We are here to support your students and you through this process. We too are learning, adapting, and shifting, while maintaining our focus on quality, research-based instructional pedagogy to help our students achieve academic success.

Let’s Do This!

Respectfully,

Art supply pick-up and donations

Gardner Families,

This week you will be picking up your child’s classroom materials, devices (if you requested them), and art supplies for their art classes. But this is a reminder that LAUSD does NOT pay for student art supplies. Gardner Street’s visual art program is completely funded by our parents - The Friends of Gardner organization. Art classes (and all other FOG funded programs) will still be offered this year and Friends of Gardner is also supplying all of the necessary art supplies for art at home.

To keep it equitable, every child will have the same supplies according to their grade level curriculums. However, as you can imagine, this gets expensive, especially since the usual budget is spent on supplies that are shared by entire classes. So if you are able to pay for your child's supplies, please click the donate button below, or help us avoid credit card fees by donating via Venmo with @Friendsof-Gardner. The cost per kit/child is 16 dollars. This is ABSOLUTELY NOT required. Every student will receive these supplies NO MATTER WHAT. But if you are able, it would help Friends of Gardner to continue to offer more to everyone. And if you happen to have enough to pay for another student’s art supplies as well, it sure would help the cause. We are a community that helps each other, because we’re all in this together.

Once again, this is not required — but it is appreciated. Thanks for being a part of it. We can’t wait to see the creativity that comes from the year ahead.

You can view the supply/device distribution schedule here.

Your child's final report card will be mailed home from our LAUSD central office.

Surveys

Please take a few minutes to complete several surveys. The links are here.

  • Community School Needs Assessment---This survey went home about a month ago. This survey is designed to glean information as to which services and supports you may need from the school so we can better serve your students.

  • Instructional Continuity-We need your honest feedback. We want to know how your child's experience was with distance learning. In the event that we must remain or return to distance learning, we want to ensure that we make the necessary improvements to support your child.

The other part of this survey is designed to glean preliminary information about your thoughts and needs for your child as we examine how to reopen school in the fall. The information in our survey is only for our school use. In the coming days, Superintendent Beutner will send a similar survey. Please complete the one from his office as well. Our LAUSD leaders will use your responses to make decisions on the re-opening of school. OurLAUSD leaders are committed to making decisions based on science and data. They are being guided by state and federal health officials. Student and staff health & safety will remain their top priority.

  • Reorganization-We are in the process of forming classrooms for the upcoming school year. This survey isdesigned for you to share relevant information about your child as we put together next year's class assignments. Please note, this is not an opportunity to request a specific teacher. To ensure equity and balance in classroom assignments, teacher requests are not accepted .

Thank you again for all that you have done to support your children during these challenging times. I hope to see you soon and I hope you have a restful summer.

Most respectfully,

Karen Hollis

Principal
